There's a wind of change sweeping across western Europe.  It's not just Catalonia - Scotland will hold a referendum on independence in 2014, and there was recently a huge rally for independence in the Veneto region of Italy.  Political elites and elitist political academics have long assumed their cosy borders were set in stone, but now citizens are muscling in and demanding to have a say on the matter themselves.

The only real question is which will be the first new state?  It's likely to be either Scotland or Catalonia.
