Forbes Burnham and Cheddi Jagan - Joint Fathers of the Guyanese Nation
I see Hammie is making a strong historical case for why Cheddi should not have the sign board naming him “Father of the Nation.” He also makes a credible case against the renaming of Timehri Airport to the Cheddi Jagan Airport.
While I support the historical basis and premise on which Hammie has advanced his arguments, I am of the opinion that both Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham should be named joint “Fathers of the Nation.”
They both made mistakes and one was admittably of the more “unforgivable nature” but we cannot ignore the joint and separate contributions of both men to our country. Even more importantly, our country needs the symbolism of both of these consequential men, representing our two major historical races/ethnicities and parties to be so recognized and, in so doing, strengthen the foundations of national unity which is fundamental to optimal progress in our country.
While I do not expect some Guyanese to fully agree with my position at this time, many will see the wisdom of this approach in due course.
