PRISON SERVICE REVEALS AZRUDDIN MOHAMED SPENT OVER NINE HOURS OUTSIDE HOLDING AREA, REJECTS CLAIM OF 23-HOUR CONFINEMENT
The Guyana Prison Service has released details of the daily activities and treatment of remanded Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed for Saturday, October 31, and Sunday, November 1, 2026, disputing claims that he was confined to his holding area for 23 hours and 50 minutes.
According to an official statement issued by the Prison Service, Mohamed was briefed on the admission process, prison rules and general expectations upon his arrival on Saturday. He also received visits from family members and attorneys and was permitted to make a telephone call to a relative, which lasted approximately 16 minutes.
The Prison Service further detailed his activities on Sunday, November 1, stating that he was unlocked at 6:00 hours for morning hygiene before receiving breakfast delivered by a relative at 6:40 hours.
During the day, Mohamed participated in a welfare counselling session lasting approximately one hour and 30 minutes, made three telephone calls to family members totalling approximately 29 minutes, and received a two-hour visit from one of his attorneys. Lunch was also delivered by a relative during the visit.
The statement added that Mohamed was permitted afternoon hygiene at 15:35 hours and was examined by a medical officer 20 minutes later, after which he was provided with cough medication.
He was also supplied with reading and writing materials before receiving a visit from Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot at 19:00 hours. During that visit, Mohamed reportedly indicated that he had no complaints.
The Prison Service said security checks were conducted periodically throughout the night.
Based on its official records, the institution said Mohamed spent approximately nine hours and 20 minutes outside his holding area on Sunday.
It therefore maintained that claims suggesting he was confined to the holding area for “23 hours and 50 minutes” on that day are inconsistent with its documented records.
The Guyana Prison Service said it remains committed to ensuring that Mohamed, like every other person in its custody, is treated in accordance with the law, established prison procedures and applicable standards, while maintaining security and order within the institution.
Optics is everything in politics, it is the most powerful tool of mobilization.
If I am incarcerated and my apologists are peddling a narrative of me being in inhumane conditions, the last thing I want to do is appear looking clean and bourgeoisie with expensive shades and a clean shirt.
I would engineer the worse appearance I can muster in a white ragged jersey with droopy eyes and slumped shoulders while pretending that I cannot walk from the lack of mobility with policemen trying to hold me up as I drag my way up the court steps.
Oh yea, eyes would be rubbed several several times to make it look red from a lack of sleep.
The court appearance must match the narratives.
