CWI retains Phil Simmons’ for Australia Test series.
CWI announced just minutes ago, that Phil Simmons has decided to step down as head coach following the disgraceful exit from the T20 WC currently underway, down under in Australia.
This is welcome news and not totally unexpected. Phil Simmons has overstayed his time. This is his second tenure and he has absolutely nothing to show for it. It was expected that he would hang his head in shame and immediately step aside. But no, he didn’t. He waited until his return to the Caribbean to do so and while CWI released a statement, it didn’t come but with troubling signals.
Simmons has stepped down but will remain for the two test series in Australia from November 30th to December 12th.
What BS is this?
CWI is known for stupid decisions. This is clearly a continuation of the foolishness that characterizes West Indies Cricket.
One can only assume that Simmons was asked to step down with immediate effect and refused. His contract runs into 2024. CWI would be legally obligated to uphold their end of the bargain. Either fire Simmons and be held liable for breaking the contract or compromise. My feeling is that CWI opted for the latter position. Simmons stays on for Australia and gets an early payout.
Any person with a smidgen of decency and shame would have expressed a more heartfelt apology to the fans, supporters, sponsors and management but not Simmons. The man has no scruples. He is shameless. He ought to do the only honourable thing and step down immediately. Why hang around like a stale odour for the 2 Test series in Australia?
CWI ought to fire him with immediate effect and while at it, they must get rid of the bowling and batting coaches, Roddy Estwick and Monty Desai.
