Spectacular and popular global champions one day; struggling underdogs the next. That’s what it is going to feel like for the West Indies in the tri-nation One-Day International series. Unless, of course, they can rise above the lowly expectations, shove aside the inevitable distractions of glaring selectorial inconsistency and whatever other type of Caribbean cricket drama that may be unfolding off the field to give South Africa and World Cup holders Australia a real run for their money over the three weeks of competition in Guyana, St Kitts and Barbados.
Eden Gardens in Kolkata was the scene of a historic double-celebration for the region eight weeks ago, Carlos Brathwaite’s stunning four consecutive sixes in the final over against England overshadowing the fireworks celebration that followed and putting the seal on a perfect West Indian evening in India after the women upended overwhelming favourites and three-time champions Australia to claim their first world crown.
