West Indies squad for first four matches of Tri Nation ODI Series

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Selection Panel today named the 14-man squad for the first four matches of the upcoming Tri Nation One-Day International Series.

The squad includes two players who are yet to play in ODIs for the West Indies. These are: off-spinner Ashley Nurse, who was a member of the West Indies team which won the ICC World T20 last month; and fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, who has played 16 Test matches.

The Tri Series will feature West Indies, South Africa and Australia and all matches will be day/night. The series starts in at the Guyana National Stadium (June 3-7), then moves to Warner Park, St Kitts (June 11-15); and concludes at Kensington Oval, Barbados (June 19-26).

Only one decent left hander on the team? All these right handers will be easy to set fields to.

I'd play them in this order though:

I hope Ramdin doesn't play. I'd have preferred Perms, Badree or Bishoo instead of Benn. I'd have preferred 3 spinners and only 1 dedicated pacer.

This is a make or break series for Samuels, Charles and Pollard. I'd have preferred Kraigg Brathwaite opening.

All in all, it's a decent team, especially if Bravo and Samuels click. The problem will be containing Smith and ABDV. I can see those two giants mauling all-rounders like Holder. You probably need sneaky guys like Narine or Bishoo to knock them over.

Gabriel (improving?) and Taylor (generaly poor vs SA) can be dangerous at times, but I have very little faith in them.

The more I think about it, the more I like this team. It's just one extra lefty (or a specialist opener/strike rotater like Kraigg or Leon) and one great bowler away from a team that can challenge the Aussies.

Which team WIN the Nagico regional ODI  championship ??

Barbados or Trinidad !

Writing for ESPN, Colin Benjamin is left bemused by the selection policy:

Quote: How does Jonathan Carter, who averaged 6.33 in three ODIs in Sri Lanka, and wasn't among the top ten run scorers in the Nagico Super50 competition, make the squad?

How do Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles, who averaged 13 and 18 respectively with the bat in the Super50, get selected over Evin Lewis, the best opener in competition?

Kemar Roach is out of form and Ravi Rampaul a Kolpak player, so their omission is justifiable, but why is Shannon Gabriel, who did not play in the Super50, one of the quick bowlers in the squad ahead of Rayad Emrit?

There are three spinners in the squad - Sunil Narine, Ashley Nurse and Sulieman Benn. Why wasn't Devendra Bishoo chosen, given West Indies' first two ODIs will be played in Guyana, his home turf? It's amazing that Bishoo and Narine, the ICC's Emerging Players for 2011 and 2012 respectively, have only played one international together.

Benjamin also raises a very valid point regarding the conflict between T20 leagues and international selection. The sheer number of T20 competitions that are played around the world could potentially lead to players being forced to choose between club and country.
