Historian Dr Brinsley Samaroo yesterday expressed his disappointment over Government’s decision to re-purpose Trinidad and Tobago’s first public library to house only the Dr Eric Williams Memorial Collection.

The original purpose was to utilise the heritage library to store the memorabilia and artefacts of all T&T’s past prime ministers and presidents, including Williams, ANR Robinson, George Chambers and Noor Hassanali.

Samaroo was part of a committee which worked for more than two years collecting artefacts and information from the relatives of former leaders which were to be preserved and showcased at the first public library.

Communications Minister Maxie Cuffie said last week that the library would be restored to its former glory, at a cost of $21 million, and be used to house the Eric Williams Memorial Collection, currently kept at The University of the West Indies, St Augustine.

that's no big deal.  that is the critique of a small prejudiced mind. 

so let there be a library for Williams..and when the time comes one for Naipaul.  where is the rule that says there must be one facility for all of our greats?

and indeed there is one already...the existing Titty public library system..a very good one back in my day and I believe still very a very good... that contains information on all of the native greats of not only Titty but the west indies.

and when the facilities for Naipaul and Williams are completed they wont be just about them anyway.  to make those facilities into what they must be for them to be useful to the west indian people, they are going to have to be about the west indies... period!
