Marlon Samuels has been banned from bowling in international cricket

West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels has been banned from bowling in international cricket for 12 months following an independent assessment of his action, which took place at the ICC’s accredited testing centre in Brisbane earlier this month.

The 34-year-old was assessed after the legality of his bowling action came under question by the match officials during West Indies’ first Test defeat against Sri Lanka in Galle (14-17 October). 

Following the match, Samuels was reported by the match officials pursuant to the ICC Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions and subsequently underwent the independent assessment in Brisbane in accordance with the Regulations.

The assessment revealed that Samuel’s elbow extension exceeded 15 degrees while bowling and, thus, he employed an illegal bowling action.

Samuels was originally suspended from bowling his faster deliveries in international cricket in December 2013.

As this report constitutes the player’s second suspension within a two-year period, he is now automatically suspended from bowling in international cricket for a 12-month period.

Samuels is entitled to appeal any procedural aspect of the Independent Assessment that has led to this automatic suspension. However, only after the expiry of this one-year period will he be entitled to approach the ICC for a re-assessment of his bowling action.

Seems to have banned himself from batting too

It's not been a great week for Marlon. On top of being banned from bowling, critics and ex-players alike have publicly criticized his actions in the first Test.

“That is bewildering, even for us,” Mohammed said.

“Because Marlon has that pretty laid-back attitude, the Jamaican Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels type attitude; that’s one thing.

“But when you’re on the field as the most senior player in the team? You have to remember he was first here (in Australia) 15 years ago, as 19-year-old.

“And you really expect him to show a bit more interest in what’s going on. He was almost a spectator out on the boundary (on Friday).

“And when he batted (in the first innings), yes it was a brilliant catch by Nathan Lyon, but someone of his calibre should really be able to buckle down and bat for a long time.”

“I think that’s a worrying sign for someone who’s just 34 years of age.

“He should have a few more years left in West Indies cricket as a senior player guiding someone like a Jason Holder and the others along.”

Warne took the long handle to Samuels during his commentary on Channel Nine, while Brian Lara also tweeted that the veteran could be doing more to help his young teammates.

“Marlon Samuels is Mr Experience out there but he hasn’t really given anything in this Test match so far. He’s fielded on the boundary, hasn’t shown any enthusiasm or any intensity,” Warne said.

Was there ever any explanation offered as to why all of Marlon's fingers were taped up? I can't ever recall seeing a cricketer take the field with all of their fingers taped up like that before.

When Marlon had a point to prove he bat good but since he prove he point he nah care.
