The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) yesterday defended its Leader, President David Granger over his description in a US diplomatic cable of June 27, 1974, while a GDF Major, as an “anti-East Indian racistâ€.
In a statement in response to the publication of the contents of the cable in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek, the PNCR said that “Granger has dedicated his entire working life to public service and at all times a major pillar of his written works and his personal philosophy has been the pursuit of national unity.â€
The United States Ambassador to Guyana Perry Holloways says that in his interaction with President David Granger he has not arrived at the conclusion that the President is a racist.
In an interview with a group of reporters on Monday morning, the Ambassador related that he has not read the Wikileaks cable that says the President is racist but rather the reports.
He stated that from the excerpts in those reports, it is clear that the cable did not label then Major Granger a racist, but stated that he has a history of being anti-east Indian.
“I haven’t seen the cable I have only seen what’s in the press – I was in elementary school when the cable was written…The one comment which was referring to his reputation, we did not call him that – we referred to his reputation if you read very carefully,†Holloway stated.
The Ambassador stated that the author of the cable, then Ambassador Spencer Matthews King was no longer with the US Government hence there is no way to ask what were the thoughts of the Ambassador when the cable was penned.
“It does not reflect my own personal observation in interactions with the President nor does it reflect what he has been saying in public and doing in public as part of the coalition government,†he said.
The Granger led People’s National Congress Reform has already lashed out at the cable’s contents.
“President Granger’s personal life and his life works clearly debunks this malicious and unfounded claim. The PNCR questions the wisdom of the publication of this dated US Diplomatic Cable without a right of reply or any other supporting evidence.â€
The cable by the then American Ambassador says that then Head of the Guyana National Service, Elvin Mc David and “have reputations as ideologues and anti-East Indian racists.
in secret diplomatic cables americans don't lie or tell untruths..or bandy about in their work assessments of their assets that are inaccurate.
this is their real work, what they are actually about. they have never, ever been, let me tell you inefficient at it. if they said that about Granger I will bet all I have they were right. they are never wrong about such things.
