History is not on New Zealand's side.

The highest successful run chase by an opposing team in Australia is 414 by South Africa at Perth in 2008. Highest 4th innings total by an opposition in Australia is 445 by England in a loss at Melbourne in 1978.

England hold the highest 4th innings score by an opposing team at the Gabba with 370 in a loss in 2006. The highest successful 4th innings run chase here is just 179, also by England in '98.

Rain ensures that New Zealand still have a glimmer of hope in saving this Test. Nathan Lyon getting the crucial wicket of Kane Williamson before play was called off for the day will makes things even tougher. I thought Williamson was slightly unlucky to have been adjudged lbw.

Looking at the forecast, it would appear that more rain is possible tomorrow.

51.1
Lyon to Williamson, goes for the pull and the ball turns in from outside off

to strike him on the upper part of the back thigh... Williamson has reviewed.

His back leg was bent, but it still looked a little high.....

Impact on the edge of off stump, and it's clipping the upper edge of the bails

Umpire's call.

That's a little unfortunate  :-[

No rain ........ and all over !!!

Unfortunate decision on BigMac ... he wasn't out!!  Luved his comments post match when asked about it by Mark Nicholas .... "Both good umps ... they're allowed to get one wrong.  Just got to cop it on the chin mate"  Big Grin

In fact his whole speech was a good one.... no excuses, very honest, gracious and realistic !! .......... "Just got to cop it sweet"

Unfortunately, that didn't take too long. You have to wonder whether the layoff between Tests hurt New Zealand somewhat. They haven't played a Test in 6 months. It will be interesting to see if Matt Henry comes back into the team for the second Test. He impressed against England at Lord's. Is Adam Milne still injured?
