[inewsguyana.comHome - INews Guyana] – The route taken by the APNU+AFC Government to increase the remuneration for Minister, Vice Presidents and Parliamentary Officials has been defended by Legal Affairs Minister Basil Williams who insisted that the process was transparent.

This is after the government would have received scathing criticisms for the increases at this time given the state of the economy. The Government was also criticized for the manner in which it executed the increases even after telling the nation that there were no immediate plans for an increase.

Williams told reporters on Monday that the process was “transparent.”

“I think it’s transparent; don’t you? It can’t be something hidden because it has to be laid in parliament…it has to be approved in parliament,” Williams said in response to a question from iNews.

The Government currently has a one-seat majority in the National Assembly hence the motion would be passed when laid in the House.

GTUC General Secretary Lincoln Lewis on Friday stated that while the Union is concerned about the manner in which the increase were administered, it believes that wages should be increased for everyone – including politicians.

“We believe in a wage led economy and we can’t believe in a wage led economy and condemn the increase. We are not against the increase in wages or salaries. What we are concerned about in the process in which it has been applied to deliver it,” said Lewis.

Other civil society groups such as the Guyana Teacher Union, Red Thread and Transparency International are among the voices of critics against the move by the government.

The order for the increases was made on September 23, by Finance Minister Winston Jordan.

The redistribution campaign is on full press. I guess ppp is making the country violent by instructing law fearing citizens to take up arms, jump on dirt bikes and rob business enterprises. In the meantime APNU is afraid that the trough will run dry so they are courting a new set of "investors" from the great white north (Canada) to come and keep the honey flowing for these ppp activists or dirt bike criminals...as some call them. Security Guard shot in hospital robbery recovering well

[inewsguyana.comHome - INews Guyana] – The security guard that was shot on Sunday while transporting money form the Balwant Singh Hospital to the bank is said to be in good condition and is recovering well.

This was confirmed by RK Security Boss, Roshan Khan who told iNews that the guard was in receipt of excellent medical care from a private institution.

Khan told iNews that “we are very ecstatic that he is out of danger.”

He said a press conference to address the issue will be held later this week.

The guard along with a colleague were held at gunpoint and robbed a large sum of money they were transporting to the bank at the time.

The money was moments before uplifted from the privately operated – Balwant Singh Hospital.

According to reports, the guards , who were also armed, were held up at Middle and East Streets by three armed bandits on motor cycles.

Police in a subsequent released identified the shot security guard as 23-year-old Garvin Trotman.

According to police two of the perpetrators drove up on a motor cycle and held up Trotman who was driving the security vehicle, while the other man, on foot, held up Andre Glenn who was in the front passenger seat.

Trotman was shot to his back and hand and a bag with an undisclosed sum of cash was handed over to the armed men who escaped.
