With about 18,048 suicides from 1972 to 2013, in people aged between 15 to 39 years, Japan is a country with one of the highest international suicides rates. Significance of 1st Sep in this scenario is that most of these suicides took place on this date.
This fact is not a coincidence rather it is a natural reaction to what is commonly known to the rest of us as bullying. A majority of youngsters in Japan commit suicide after getting completely frustrated and down by the ongoing continuous bullying they face in schools and other youth gatherings. 1st September being the starting days of a new semester after the summer break, is the day when depressed youngsters return to school to once again face the same fate again and thus give in to their lives altogether.
