Why not immediately? The selectors should not allow him to carry on for selfish reasons if the team is not being served.

Hopefully Trott will be remembered for a very good Test career. His numbers against Australia were better than his career averages. He averaged 48.26 against Australia (with 3 centuries and 3 fifties) and 44.08 for his career. He was particularly immense in Australia with an average of 66.28.

His 168* in Melbourne was an absolute gem of an innings that propelled England to an innings victory and retain the Ashes. Be well, Trotty.

I want to laugh but I can't. West Indies have made a batsman from England retire and it should call for celebrations. Trott was not ready for international cricket so soon and his rush into the team lead to this.

Why should Trott retiring be cause for celebrations? Trott was a world class number 3. He finishes with the 17th highest average for an Englishman with at least 50 Test matches played. Only Wally Hammond scored more runs for England at number 3. The game of cricket is better with world class batsman in the game than sat on the sidelines, no matter which team you root for.
