The contempt for which it should be held was summed up by the fact England opened the bowling in their opponents’ second innings

with Liam Plunkett and Mark Wood, two players who were not even in the original 12-man team for this game.

Both bowled well, taking a wicket each against opposition whose batting could be described as reckless,

although even that is a wild understatement.
