Sheffield’s Joe Root may be rested on England’s tour of the West Indies next month.
The Sheffield Collegiate batsman, aged 24, has played more matches than any other England player since his Test debut in 2012 - appearing 83 times over all formats.
Root has established himself as a key player for England in Test matches, T20s and One-Day Internationals.
But with a mammoth schedule ahead - England are due to play Test series on three continents, face a home Ashes series against Australia and compete in the World T20 in India - England are keen to avoid burning the young star out, and could rest him against the West Indies - especially with a comfortable series win expected against weakened opponents.
England play 17 Test matches in just over nine months, including series against Pakistan and South Africa.
It was long rumoured that Root may be rested for this series. This would be disappointing as Root is England's most exciting (not to mention, most consistent) batsman to watch right now.

At some point in the future England will need to find a replacement for the pair and Jimmy has already hinted at retiring from the ODI team. Neither Broad or Anderson inspired any confidence at the World Cup though Jimmy had a fantastic summer against India and Sri Lanka picking up 37 wickets in 7 matches at an average of 20.89.

I suspect whatever Jimmy does this year will be more than matched by Boult, Southee & co for NZ and Starc, Hazlewood & co for Oz.
Well the absence of root should not stop England from beating the mediocre West Indies team according to the new ECB chairman. Root will not be missed especially by the West Indies.

I think anyone that is a fan of cricket will miss watching Root play. Root and Kane Williamson are two of the most exciting young batsman in the game right now. Root's average in the last 12 months of Test cricket is 97.12. For comparison, Williamson is at 89.16 over the same time span.
