Israelis go to polls after bitter election campaign

Israeli voters are heading to the polls at the end of a close-fought and bitter election campaign.

With Binyamin Netanyahu trailing in the last opinion polls to his main rival, Yitzhak Herzog of the opposition Zionist Union, Tuesday’s election has been presented to Israelis – 5.8 million of whom are eligible to vote – as a choice over the country’s future direction.


That was underlined on the eve of the polls when Netanyahu unequivocally ruled out the establishment of a Palestinian state and vowed to strengthen construction of settlements in occupied east Jerusalem should he be re-elected.

Polling stations opened at 7am with the first exit polls due to be published at 10pm (8pm GMT) on Tuesday ahead of the publication of official results next week at the beginning of efforts to form a coalition government.

Election analysts are predicting one of the largest turnouts since 1999, with up to 80% of eligible Israelis expected to vote. Election officials said 26.5% of the electorate had voted by midday, a rate similar to previous years.

Whatever you think of the parties running for office, the whole system of government is absolutely ridiculous and inoperable. The United States, despite our numerous problems, has a far superior system of government. We elect a President for a set term and we don't collapse governments on the President's say so. You can complain all you want about a two-party system, but it has been able to function (maybe not so well of late) enough to form a government every four years. Representative Democracy is the better system.

Israel is a historical mistake and there will be no peace in the Middle East until Israel is dismantled and most of its population deported back to Europe. Helen Thomas was spot on.

I can't say I am fully aware of Israeli politics. I do know about the various inequalities in the country and not just against the Palestinians but African immigrants as well. If one thinks constantly shutting out other people and using force to maintain control will work, think again. Those who are powerless will only tolerate so much until the ticking time bomb goes off and then you have a new generation individuals who will seek any means to gain power. It's a scary dynamic but Israel has a long way to go in order to be a fully peaceful state.

there is also the existential fact that the Jews are few in number, don't reproduce at significant rate.  half a million black people in Israel will be more than 7 million..the Jewish population of Palestine.. soon.  the Jews cant tolerate that thought.  deh will kill and poison every last one if they have to..including Black Jews from Ethiopia whom deh have already killed off by destroying their reproductive capacity

the strangest and most telling aspect of all this is that the Jews are the ones behind the turmoil in Africa that cause massive flows of refuges/immigrants..the same ones who flock to Israel.  talk about from the pan into the fi'ah..the most sorry state of ignorance imaginable.  deh dont know who there enemy is and so deh flock into his arms.

deh doh have to go anywhere to meet their enemy.  he is there, in their homes in Africa, making a pigs breakfast of their lives.  the answer is to fight and defeat him there, kick his rarse out and make a sweet life at home fuh demselves
