HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — The right eastbound lane of Route 3 over the Hackensack River was set to be shut down for two weeks, after crews discovered a structural deficiency.
The lane over the bridge between East Rutherford and Secaucus was shut down Wednesday after a routine inspection of the bridge, which identified flaws in the lower structural support column.
Cracks in the steel frame of the bridge were also found, forcing the closure of the right lane Wednesday afternoon, the New Jersey Department of Transportation said.
Repairs are expected to take about two weeks, the department said. The other lanes will remain open, but trucks will be prohibited from traveling in the left lane during the closure.
New Jersey’s transportation commissioner has also ordered reviews of the state’s most structurally deficient bridges and warned if lawmakers don’t come up with a way to fund repairs, towns won’t receive any money this year for road work.
