Quote: [size=12pt]Although South Africa need only 115 runs to win the third and final Test today, West Indies batting coach Stuart Williams says his squad can still win.
The Windies will need to take nine wickets, while South Africa require 115 runs on what promises to be an intriguing final day at Newlands.
When play resumes today, the Proteas will start on nine for one, in pursuit of their target of 124.
This came after West Indies were bowled out for 215 in their second innings yesterday.
But while Williams admitted that his team hasn’t found the consistency with the bat, he believes there is still a winning shot.
“It’s quite difficult, stressful, but we still have to find a way to get the fellows up and running tomorrow (today) still have to dig deep, still have to come out tomorrow (this) morning and try and set the right tone and hopefully I will find some stuff to say to the guys that will help to do that...There are still 115 runs to find , some of the balls are misbehaving already, so we are still in with a chance,†Williams said.
The batting coach didn’t blame the rain breaks for his side’s collapse yesterday .
“That’s the element of rain, but that can’t be an excuse because you can’t play cricket within rain. There were moments today we played badly. And throughout the whole series our lower order never really came to the front and we spoke about it all along and that’s basically it,†he said.
Williams said the original plan was to bat out the day or make get at least 230 to 240 for a lead.
He said the positives coming out of the series was that the West Indies had two centuries with Samuels averaging over 50 and three run outs in the South African first innings.
“And although we don’t have a bowler who took five, six or seven wickets, we worked well as a unit in this game, we have some positives,†he said.
