RIP Geoff Pullar, England opening batsman

London - Former England batsman Geoff Pullar has died aged 79.

Quote:[size=12pt]Pullar made 28 Test appearances for England, making his debut against India in July 1959.

His 131 against India at Old Trafford in his second Test was the first century scored by a Lancastrian on his home ground of Old Trafford.

Pullar's final match was against Australia in Adelaide in January 1963.

He started his English county career with Lancashire and moved on to Gloucestershire in 1969.

Pullar was voted one of Wisden's Cricketers of the Year in 1960.[/size]

He played in all 5 tests when England toured WI in 1960

The Guardian had a nice piece on Pillar that included some interesting tidbits.

The first was that he made his name at international level as an opening batsman, even though he had never before played in that position. The second was that he had a better batting average in the highest echelons of the game than he did in its lower reaches.

After cricket, Pullar ran fish and chip shops in Lowton, near Wigan, and in Chorlton-cum-Hardy in Manchester, before setting up a sandwich shop in Knutsford and then working as a driver for a private hire car company. A keen walker and golfer, he was an active man, still covering the early morning runs to Manchester airport a few days before his death.
