What is your belief in free speech, and why won't it work?

Free speech and free expression (guaranteed in your Bill of Rights and Constitution) is not free speech and free expression unless it is absolute and unfettered. 

The corollary to the right to speak freely and to freely express one's self is the right to hear the other person.  No matter how offensive, repugnant, or distasteful the other people's opinion or statements are I would be livid if I was prevented from hearing it and to freely scrutinize and criticize it.

We chose to live in liberal democracies and not some backwater Muslim country like Yemen because we value free discourse and inquiry.  David Irving should be free to write why he thinks the Holocaust didn't take place.  Salman Rushdie should be free to write a fictional work about Islam and it's prophet.  If their propositions are absurd then we should be free to hear it and read it and freely subject it to thorough scurtiny and examination and expose it as stupid or ludicrous, if it is indeed the case.

The moment we institute and legislate laws to curb these Constitutional guaranteed rights in order to appease some religious nut we slide ever more down the slope towards fascists theocratic ideals.

We must have none of it.
