Guyana v Barbados at Providence

Things just seem to be getting better for 31-year West Indies Test batsman Narsingh Deonarine, who yesterday joined three other Guyanese to score a century and capture five wickets in the same match. He achieved the feat on the third day of WICB four-day First-Class cricket Franchise game between Guyana Jaguars and Windwards Volcanoes at Providence yesterday.

Deonarine is enjoying a dream season so far and joins CR Browne (1926) and Roger Harper, who achieved the feat thrice (1987, ’95 and ’96) including 202 and 5-98 against the Windwards at Bourda in 1996.

About five minutes after the first drinks break, Narsingh Deonarine was given the ball.

I was aware that he was an occasional off-spinner who would probably bowl only three or

four overs. I told myself that I should do nothing foolish against him but just take a few

singles. Only if there was a loose ball should I put it away for a boundary.

The ball I got out to bounced slightly more than I expected.

It was a fuller delivery and faster than his normal one.

I thought I could cut it to backward point for four.

I had played a similar shot against Shillingford a little earlier.It all happened in a flash.

Before I knew it, I had played the shot and the ball was on its way to Darren Sammy

at slip. It hit his chest and he caught it on the rebound.

Might as well send DEO to SA with FUDS as well.

Bridgetown, Barbados - As widely expected, former national captain Ryan Hinds, Kyle Corbin, Roston Chase and Tino Best have taken the places of the four West Indies players named in the Test squad for South Africa for the Barbados Pride Round 3 WICB Professional Cricket League first-class match against Guyana Jaguars at Providence in Guyana, starting November 28.

Captain and opener Kraigg Brathwaite, left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn and fast bowlers Kemar Roach and Jason Holder will all be leaving the Caribbean on November 30 for the three-Test series against the South Africans.

Fast bowling all-rounder Carlos Brathwaiite, who was the West Indies 'A' team skipper on the recent tour to Sri Lanka, takes over as captain.

I miss Roger Harper. His fielding skills were a good 20 years ahead of the curve.

Bridgetown, Barbados - Captain Carlos is a happy camper now that the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has finally introduced a professional franchise framework in the region.

Carlos Brathwaite, new captain of the Barbados cricket team, believes the recently launched Professional Cricket League (PCL) is the perfect platform to help West Indian cricketers catch back up with the runaway leaders in Test cricket, South Africa and Australia.

“I believe the franchise system should have been done a long time ago. It brings a level of professionalism, and that is good, especially for young players in the West Indies,” Brathwaite told MIDWEEK SPORT in his first interview since being named captain of the Barbados Pride on Sunday.

“The youngster who once had a 8:30 to 4:30 job doesn’t have to worry now. He can get a good night’s sleep, come and train hard, share in the intensity and do the professional things players worldwide have been doing to get to the top. It’s a solid foundation for us to have,” Brathwaite said about the new PCL format.
