Report: No 'excuse for violence' in Ferguson, Obama says

Ferguson, Missouri (CNN) -- President Barack Obama joined the call for calm with word a Missouri grand jury considering whether to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown was close to making a decision.

"This is a country that allows everybody to express their views. Allows them to peacefully assemble, to protest actions that they think are unjust," the President told ABC News in an interview excerpt broadcast on Friday.

"But using any event as an excuse for violence is contrary to rule of law and contrary to who we are."

Ferguson, Missouri (CNN) -- Anticipating a grand jury decision at any moment, more businesses boarded up their doors and windows and residents hunkered down in their homes on two of Ferguson's main roads.

On Saturday, the city learned it will have to wait a little more.

The grand jury convened on Friday, but did not reach a decision, federal and local law enforcement officials told CNN.

The spotlight is on Ferguson again because of predictions that the grand jury would reach a decision sometime in mid- to late November.

Sounds like they're expecting the cop to skip.

I agree with this, though it's one sided.


The police represents the law, so the police should first uphold it.


There's a difference.


The police shouldn't have the right to act like civilians and have the status as police.

In fact,

Remember when Dinkins was Mayor in NY? And how the police went on a rampage and started tearing up property downtown in Manhattan over Dinkin's decision to install an all civilian review board? Remember that?

The cops went wild. Acting just like the people in Ferguson.

And nobody said any of that to the police. They weren't even reprimanded for their behavior. You see the double standard there?

It shouldn't be hard to keep the police in check.


You wouldn't hand a pistol to an idiot with a short fuse would you?


Of course not...


Well that shouldn't be so hard when it comes to cops.


The authorities should be wiling to correct officers caught not acting like officers.


What's the problem?

I thought this was all resolved. I hope things don't escalate again like they did regardless of what the jury decides. I read there was another unprovoked attack on a black man by a white cop afterwards also in Ferguson after the riots. But things stayed pretty quiet.

Agreed. The ego can lead us all into irreversible trouble if we will allow it to carry us that far. So we shouldn't just go haywire because of a obnoxious person who did something outrageous. There's a better way to handle everything.
