A man has multiple stab wounds after picking up a hitchhiker while travelling towards Palmerston North.
The victim picked up the hitchhiker near Whanganui about 8pm on Saturday.
As the vehicle neared Palmerston North, around the intersection of State Highway 3 and Newbury Line, the driver pulled over to let the hitchhiker out.
It was there that the hitchhiker is alleged to have pulled out a knife and attacked the driver.
Residents in the area were alerted to the incident and contacted police.
Police and ambulance staff attended and the driver was taken to Palmerston North Hospital with multiple stab wounds.
The driver has undergone surgery for his injuries and is expected to be discharged today.
''We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been driving past the area of Newbury Line around 8.45pm and saw a vehicle parked on the side of the road,'' Detective Johnny Oram said.
A 29-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the stabbing and is expected to appear in the Palmerston North District Court today.
