Adrian Peterson's case will be reviewed under the NFL's personal conduct policy, league spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed to NFL Media.
The Minnesota Vikings' running back was indicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child.
The Vikings deactivated the running back on Friday as they gathered information.
On Saturday, Montgomery (Texas) County first assistant district attorney Phil Grant told the media a trial, if there is one, likely wouldn't take place until sometime next year.
Peterson faces a criminal charge that carries a punishment of up to two years in state jail and a $10,000 fine, according to Grant. Probation is also an option for persons without criminal records. Grant added there is a "reasonable discipline" defense to the charge in Texas.
"Obviously parents are entitled to discipline their children as they see fit, except when that discipline exceeds what the community would say is reasonable," Grant said. "A grand jury having indicted this case looked at the injuries that were inflicted upon this child and determined that that discipline was not reasonable and did not reflect the community standard of what was reasonable discipline."
