A report by the OECD, a club of rich countries, produced further evidence on the widening gap between rich and poor. In the 1980s the richest 10% of the population of OECD countries earned seven times more than the poorest decile. Today they earn ten times more. The poor are also more likely to be young. Poverty rates are now highest among 18- to 25-year-olds, having dropped drastically among those aged over 65. This shift reflects both the financial support offered by pension systems in the developed world and the disproportionate effect of the recession on young people. Wealth is far more concentrated than income, with the poorest 40% of people in OECD countries holding just 3% of the wealth.

The  Minister of National  Security, Peter Bunting is calling  on  members  of  the  Police Federation to discontinue  their protest action.

In a release, Bunting said such action is inappropriate for members of the essential services.

He says the industrial action exposes the public  to  unnecessary  risk; and may damage the professional  image  of  the JCF that has seen significant improvements in recent years."

Bunting says the Security Ministry stands ready to assist the negotiations between Police  Federation  and  the  Ministry  of  Finance  and  the  Public  Service  once  this action is discontinued and the parties return to the bargaining table

SOUTH NYACK, N.Y. — State police say all four northbound lanes of the Thruway in New York City’s northern suburbs have reopened after being shut down during the morning commute by a fiery crash.

Troopers say a truck hauling 5-gallon plastic bottles of water caught fire after hitting a disabled vehicle on Interstate 87 around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday between Exit 10 and Exit 11 in Nyack in Rockland County. Police say the crash occurred at the Franklin Street overpass just north of Exit 10.

All four lanes were closed after the crash. They were all reopened by 10 a.m.

Troopers say the truck driver suffered minor injuries. Other details haven’t been released by state police yet.

The crash caused major traffic backups throughout the morning rush hour.
