'No chance' England will win World Cup - Swann

Graeme Swann and Michael Vaughan have joined forces to condemn the decision to persist with Alastair Cook as England's one-day captain, criticise the omission of Ravi Bopara from the squad to face India and insist that England are fatally destroying their chances of winning the World Cup by remaining wedded to an old-fashioned, safety-first approach overly based on dubious statistics.

The wide-ranging criticism of England's entire one-day policy, on BBC Test Match Special, represents one of the most timely and strong-minded appraisals to emerge from former members of the England dressing room for years.

I thought the TMS was overly critical especially suggesting another blasted Saffer play for us.


I agree about Ravi as his game has improved tremendously and he has been excellent over the last 2 years.

I agree, Mail. I am excited to see Hales included. Saddened to see the omission of Ravi. Kevin Pietersen also agreed with Swann and Vaughn, believing that the ODI squad has too many Test batters.

I do agree with Swanny on the batting line up. I would go with Hales, Vince, Roy, Morgan, Root, Buttler as my top 6.

I am a tad peeved with these Saffers getting into our team. We have adequate lads to try. Roy and others should.......

James Taylor is further stating a claim for his inclusion in the ODI squad. He is putting together a great knock (69* from 99 balls) for Nottingham today in the Royal London One Day Cup against Derbyshire.

I like him and he has also skippered his teams very well indeed.


I think he looked a bit lost when he last played internationals but I would like to see in in the squad at the very least.

They haven't at all. In fact I think the only ICC event they've won is that one T20 world cup. If memory serves me right, i.e.

yes Kyle,they won only the T20 world cup.Apart from that they really don't have anything in their gallery to boast off and as swann says,it is going to be tough for them to make their presence felt in the world cup.They seem to have adopted the chokers tag from SA,faltering in pressure situations.

Cook, understandably, took exception to Swann's comments. "His remarks were not that helpful - especially from a so-called friend - but he's entitled to his opinion," Cook said after England's 133-run loss [D/L method] to India in the second ODI in Cardiff. "But it's not ideal for me, especially after getting through the summer I've had. I have not spoken to him about it. The phone is always open the other way. It's a little bit disappointing.

"He's a good friend and has been a supporter and it's not helpful at this time because I am going to go and captain in this World Cup. We're going to build up to that and we've got a good chance although obviously if we play like that we aren't going to win many games of cricket."
