Patent Office Cancels Redskins Trademark

In a big move, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office announced Wednesday morning that it is cancelling six federal trademark registrations for the name of the Washington Redskins. “We decide, based on the evidence properly before us, that these registrations must be cancelled because they were disparaging to Native Americans at the respective times they were registered,” the board said. The board has removed the team’s trademark protections in the past. In 1992, the board ruled the trademarks were disparaging, but a federal court overturned it on a technicality. The decision only affects the right to register the trademarks, but won't stop the team from using them. However, it will make it much more difficult for the team to sue somebody for using the name and logos.

Seriously though.  All professional sports teams in America should get rid of these stupid racist monikers for their names.

exactly!  The people tell them that it is an insult and it compares to the N word but they keep insisting that they do nothing wrong!  WTH!!

Well the problem (for them) is that these names became trademarks and hence intellectual property.  They make money off these trademarks and brand names.

But if Americans were serious in stopping this blatant racism they would boycott the purchase of any and all merchandise using these racist logos, trademarks, and brands.

If that happened you'll see how quickly the "Red Skins" will become the "Red Kings".  In capitalism you have to play the money game to win.  Morality has little to no sway.

chicago blackhawks

what about products...Pontiac

I guess not eh.

Blackhawks would not be a derogatory name like Redskins.

Neither would Pontiac

Yippee Hooray!  ::LOL::

I only wish someone could sue the owner and make him correct the name. Ethnic intimidation occurs every time I see the name. That owners has stubbornly refused to change the name. He isn't insensitive. He is just hateful.
