Derek Fisher will be getting some time on the sidelines—as the coach of the New York Knicks. The former Oklahoma City Thunder player was considering his next move after his team was knocked out of the playoffs. Now, Knicks president Phil Jackson and Fisher are apparently finalizing a five year, $25 million deal. "In the last maybe decade or so, I've really felt like my purpose in life, my calling so to speak, was to be in a leadership position or some position of impact on other people," Fisher said earlier this month. "Coaching allows for you to positively impact other people's lives."
I am sure there is much I am missing..like it may make sense for Dwayne Wade to opt out and seek to renegotiate.
Dwayne is losing his game and the Heat does not have to pay him 40 million over 2 years as he fades into eventual retirement. they can cut him. an easier contract for the team may allow the Heat to keep him on the floor.
but LeBron and Bosh do not have to take pay cuts. they do not even need to stay in Miami. they will get paid by other teams at their full market value for the next 3-4 years.
it would be a bonus if they agreed with teams that can contend. no doubt that is exactly what would happen for them.
but to me it is critical that players max out their market worth throughout their careers.
that is the basic point about it... what they are playing for. it is a business first and foremost..basketball. that is how ownership plays it, calls it, does it. why must the players be different?
the prize must be the big contract..the hundred million deal and endorsements, money off the floor..not winning NBA championships. NBA championships are bonus. but winning NBA championships should be the focus of the teams management..and should not be decisive in the decisions of players as to where they play.
money is their championship achievements..not NBA Championships rings...especially now that winning championships seem to require financial sacrifices on the players collective part.
seems to me the players are getting manipulated by the pay-cut/NBA championship mania.
by voluntarily cutting their worth the players are behaving in an anti bargaining manner that undercuts their own unionised position and regular labour bargaining process..setting bad precedent as they go..precedent that could come back to haunt them
by my measurement I see no problem with Carmelo going back to the Knicks although that could be a bad decision given that Melo and Jackson appear not to have connected.
however Chicago can pay Melo market value but for less years so why not. and Chicago is a big market allowing for much money to be made off court as well
when players are in their prime they must look after themselves first, max out their value and let the NBA championship rings take care of themselves. I see no reason at all to be helping out the teams who imposed salary cap on themselves.
if and when the time comes to renegotiate due to age and infirmity then re-negotiate...again according to market value.
but don't take less money to help teams win championships. that is quite foolish..helping out the enemy when they..the players.. should be looking to break management completely..and take over the teams if possible.
the players do not realise that they are in a zero sum game and that ultimately one side..management or players.. is going to win by the elimination of the other as an equal factor in the basketball process. back to slavery then,,or become owners themselves..or force community take over of ownership.
the Green Bay packers example is a start. community ownership! change the ownership model completely. only then players attitude to winning championships should change from the market value, money first approach
