Three former Windies cricket legends to be knighted in Antigua

ST.JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) – Three West Indies cricket legends are to be knighted during the first One-Day International (ODI) between England and the West Indies at the Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Grounds on Friday, according to media reports from St John’s.

Former fast bowlers Andy Roberts and Curtly Ambrose and former Windies captain and batsman Richie Richardson will be knighted, the Antigua Observer reported yesterday.
Organisers planning the event have been tight-lipped but the Observer quoted sources as saying that the Antigua and Barbuda cricket greats will be knighted during the lunch break by Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack.
Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer and Leader of the Opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP) Gaston Browne will also be in attendance.
Roberts, the first Antiguan and Barbudan to represent the West Indies made his debut against England in March of 1974.
The bowler was part of the “quartet” of West Indian fast bowlers from the mid-seventies to the early eighties that had a devastating effect on opposition batsmen at both Test and One Day International levels. The other three bowlers are Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Colin Croft.
Former West Indies captain and middle order batsman, Sir Viv Richards, arguably the finest batsman of his generation was knighted by the Antiguan government in 1999.

If the knighthood is the highest honour, I can endorse Ambrose but not the other two, although they were also good servants.

They just did not attain the heights required in my opinion.

Ther is the issue of retaining a colonial system.

The International Organization for Migration says that one-third of the Antiguan population comprises Guyanese and other migrants.This information was provided by the IOM as  it prepared to release in St John’s the findings of a preliminary assessment of mechanisms addressing mixed migration flows and the needs of the most vulnerable migrants in Antigua and Barbuda.
IOM noted that migration flows to, within and out of the Caribbean have become increasingly more mixed, with some international migrants especially vulnerable.
At a debriefing session being held in the capital St. John’s, IOM will report that there are migrants who may be in particularly vulnerable situations such as those trafficked for sexual exploitation or forced labour and those not being paid the minimum wage.
It said that at least one-third of the 74,324 population in Antigua and Barbuda are migrants who arrive mostly by air from the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Guyana.

And they even gave one ah dem mudlanders a knighthood.

This place will be packed as the new knights of the realm kneel before Her Majesty (or Her Majesty's rep in Antigua)
