FIGHTER,

I am no great Shiv fan but I acknowledge his colossal contribution and service to West indies Cricket. He is talismanic and a loyal servant.

Many of the west Indian of the 70s do not have strike rates but compare the ODIs strike rate with that of Greenidge, Haynes and a few others. Again compare Samuel's Test and ODI strike rates to Shiv and you will be very surprised they are quite similar.

In tests you need to have the grafter who is fit physically and mentally to occupy the crease for a long time.

If you do not want to see poke and bloke watch the IPL.

It is not always easy to be fast and free flowing when you stroll to the crease at 3 wickets for a few runs, something Shiv has had to do on numerous occasions.

Ok Krish,

I totally forgot what the thread was all about and just realised....silly me.

Timely question as Windies are about play India at the same venue, Eden Gardens Kolkata, but in 1958 first innings of the third test when Lord Kanhai scored his maiden test century of 256, his highest test score, and his countryman Basil Fitzherbert Butcher scored 103!

West Indies won that battle comfortable. Massive first innings score as Sobers also scored an unbeaten ton. Roy Gilchrist was the destroyer of India bagging  a 9for in the match.
