That may be, but I've seen top batsman get hit on the side of the head or even suffer nasty injuries when the ball has found its way through a gap in the helmet. As with all things in life there is no guarantee of safety, not even for the most skilled.
Thankfully helmets do prevent serious injuries most of the time.
