Barnes is among 11 of the UK’s greatest football heroes, who are being recognised by Royal Mail to celebrate 150 years since the rules of Association Football were established. The organisation said the special stamps, available online from May 9, are also being issued to mark the Football Association’s (FA) 150th anniversary and the Scottish Football Association’s 140th anniversary. Barnes, who has gone onto various roles including football coaching and television presenting, was signed by Watford from a non-league side and later moved onto Liverpool in 1987. He is often credited with scoring the finest English goal of all time when England took on Brazil during a friendly at the Maracana Stadium, in Rio de Janeiro, in June 1984. Re: Guess who’s received his own stamp? - chairman - 02-16-2013 GLORY One of England’s most glorious football moments saw Barnes dribble past four defenders and the Brazilian goalkeeper to score a goal of stunning individual brilliance, still talked about nearly 30 years later. “Barnes has been described by many of his former Liverpool and England teammates as simply the best footballer they ever played alongside,” the accompanying stamp citation read. “A sublimely talented and extraordinarily graceful dribbler, Barnes was also strong and quick, a combination of qualities which at times made him almost unplayable. “He was also a precise and creative passer and finisher who rarely gave the ball away and was comfortable anywhere in midfield or up front.” He was also a man of other talents, lending his rapping skills to New Order’s No.1 chart hit, World in Motion released as part of England’s World Cup campaign in 1990.
