Veteran Guyanese politician and historian Eusi Kwayana has died at the age of 101, his passing confirmed to NCN News by Working People’s Alliance (WPA) Co-Leader Dr David Hinds.

Dr Hinds said he received confirmation of Kwayana’s death from his family, which is expected to issue an official statement. He added that the WPA will also release a statement on the passing of one of its most prominent founding figures.

Kwayana, born Sydney Evanson King on April 4, 1925, was a respected political activist, educator and writer whose contributions to Guyana’s political development spanned more than eight decades.

He was an early member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), serving as Assistant General Secretary and Minister of Communications and Works in the short-lived PPP government of 1953, before the British suspended the constitution.

Following the political divisions of the 1950s, Kwayana eventually joined the People’s National Congress (PNC) under Forbes Burnham before later becoming a leading figure in the WPA, where he worked closely with the late Dr Walter Rodney.

He was also instrumental in establishing the African Society for Cultural Relations with Independent Africa (ASCRIA) and remained an outspoken advocate for democracy, racial equality, social justice and national unity.

Meanwhile, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) have expressed deep sorrow over his passing, describing him as a patriot, historian and towering figure in Guyana’s political and social development.

In a statement, the parties said Kwayana dedicated his life to the struggles and aspirations of the Guyanese people, contributing significantly to the country’s independence movement and political evolution.

They also highlighted his contributions as a historian and writer, noting that his work helped preserve Guyana’s history for future generations.
