A southwestern Michigan man is in jail after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend's pet donkey during a domestic dispute Sunday night in LaPorte County.
Olvydas Abromavieius, 50, is charged with a felony county of domestic violence animal cruelty and a misdemeanor count of domestic battery.
In a news release, LaPorte County police Capt. Mike Kellems said officers responded just after 9 p.m. Sunday to a home in the 8600 block of North Wilhelm Road. When they arrived, they found Abromavieius and his girlfriend drunk, and his girlfriend claimed he had battered her.
While on the property, deputies noticed a donkey in distress and found it was bleeding profusely after being shot in the head near the right eye. Police called for help, but the donkey, named Jack, died before a veterinarian could arrive.
Abromavieius, a resident of Union Pier, was booked into the LaPorte County Jail and was scheduled to appear Tuesday in LaPorte Superior Court.
