South Africa's Test future - dillinger10 - 07-21-2016 Firdose Moonda penned an interesting article today discussing the potential for current (and future) South African cricketers opting to solely play domestic T20 competitions around the world. Quote: While T20 leagues offer US dollar income and freedom from politics, playing for South Africa means being paid in declining rands, and a responsibility to nation-building, which involves buying into CSA's aggressive transformation policy. The word from some former players is that the more valuable currency and the gigs with less baggage are likely to win out, despite the fierce loyalties bred through the South African school system that make players second-guess themselves. http://www.espncricinfo.com/southafrica/content/story/1036847.html I think this is the bigger threat to Test match cricket than dwindling crowds. A great majority of players can earn more money playing in three or four T20 tournaments across the globe than they can with a central contract. |
