The year was 1869. In a rather obscure publication printed by the Mexican Society of Geography and Statistics, there appeared a short notice written by a man named José Melgar. It was accompanied by an engraving of what is now known as Monument A at Tres Zapotes. Melgar wrote:
“In 1862, I was in the region of San Andres Tuxtla, a town in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. During my excursions, I learned that a Colossal Head had been unearthed a few years before, in the following manner. Some one-and-
a-half leagues from a sugar-cane hacienda, on the western slopes of the Sierra of San Martín, a laborer of the hacienda, while cutting the forest for his field, discovered on the surface of the ground what looked like the bottom of a great iron kettle turned upside down. He notified the owner of the hacienda, who ordered its excavation. And in the place of the kettle was discovered the abovementioned head. It was left in the excavation as one would not think to move it, being of granite and measuring two yards in height with corresponding proportions… On my arrival at the hacienda, I asked the owner of the property where the head was discovered, to take me to look at it. We went, and I was struck with surprise: as a work of art, it is without exaggeration a magnificent sculpture…what astonished me was the Ethiopic type represented. I reflected that there had undoubtedly been Negroes in this country, and that this had been in the first epoch of the world.

Lord Kitchener, (Aldwyn Roberts), Trinidadian singer and songwriter (born April 18, 1922, Arima, Trinidad, British West Indies—died Feb. 11, 2000, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago), was called the “grandmaster of calypso” and was instrumental in popularizing that music internationally; he was especially admired for his melodious style and his witty, often bawdy, lyrics. After living in London from 1948 to 1962, Lord Kitchener returned to newly independent Trinidad and Tobago, where he won the coveted title Road March King at Port of Spain’s carnival 10 times before he ceased to compete in 1976. In the 1990s his image appeared on a stamp, and a statue was erected in his honour in Port of Spain.

On Sunday, IRIE FM gave its annual lifetime achievement award to the one and only Mutabaruka. Previous recipients of the award were Bunny Wailer and Jimmy Cliff. The event was held at Muta’s alma mater Kingston Technical High School (KTHS) and was aired live on IRIE FM from 6 a.m until late evening.
This award to Muta is truly deserved.
He is a poet, Rastafarian, Garveyite, writer, educator, activist, pan Africanist, health guru, political commentator, historian, motivationist, talkshow radio presenter, philanthropist, humanitarian and so much more.
