It took me a while but I wanted to take a deeper look at the Test careers of the top 7 batsmen and how they compared to the players from their era.
As such, I calculated the overall aggregate numbers of top order batsmen (1-6) during each batsman's playing career. For example, during Kanhai's playing career (5/57-4/74), top order batsmen had an aggregate average of 36.84 with an overseas aggregate average of 35.95. This allows us to compare each batsman to their peers.
Chanderpaul's average was 12.55 runs better than the average batsman during his career. This tops the list. Followed by Lloyd (9.74) and Kanhai (9.53). Hooper was actually a below average batsman compared to his peers - averaging 0.61 runs less per innings.
Lloyd was an absolute beast when playing overseas in comparison to players from his era, averaging 11.38 runs more per innings. By comparison, Sarwan was 3.89 runs below average when playing overseas.
In terms of innings per 100, Kanhai sits atop the list, scoring a century in 4.18 fewer innings than his peers. While Lloyd needed 5.21 fewer innings to notch a century when playing overseas.
Compared to his peers, it took Fredericks 1.72 fewer innings to score a fifty. While Shiv scored a fifty overseas in 1.69 fewer innings during his era.

The higher the number, the better the player is in comparison to his peers.
In Test match cricket, Chanderpaul, Lloyd and Kanhai were in a class by themselves. Kallicharran just a step below, followed by Butcher and Fredericks. Sarwan was an average player. Hooper a below average player.

In Test matches, Richie averaged 44.39 for his career. Over this period, his peers averaged 37.35. So Richie was 7.04 runs above average. Anything above 7 is very good. Anything above 9 is excellent. Richie was also 3.2 runs above average overseas.
For comparison, Sarwan was 0.04 runs above average overall and actually 3.89 runs below average overseas.

These averages have Sarwan as superior to Richie in ODIs :-[

Correct. Although the ESPN article and the numbers I calculated above were for Test matches only.
There is no disputing that Sarwan was an excellent ODI batsman. No doubt. He was 9.98 runs above average overall compared to his peers. For comparison, Richie was 2.27 runs above average.
I will see if I can find the time later to plug all the numbers in and take a look how the top 7 batsmen from Guyana compared in ODIs.

I understand and would venture that Richie IMO was a better ODI bat than Sarwan
but their averages say different !

Ketch, to answer your question re: batting at number 3 in ODIs and how each player compared to their peers. As Sarwan split time batting between nos 3&4, (he averaged 35.15 in 82 innings batting at no 3, and 54.21 in 55 innings batting at no 4), I have gone ahead and calculated the runs above average for WI batsmen batting at either no 3 or no 4. As time was a little short, I have limited the search to 1000+ runs, but if there are certain players you want me to look into, let me know and I will run the query.
As such, the results were:
Richards +18.69 runs above average
Sarwan +7.71 runs above average
Chanderpaul +7.34 runs above average
Lara +6.85 runs above average
Hooper +4.73 runs above average
Simmons +3.34 runs above average
Samuels +0.9 runs above average
Richardson +0.46 runs above average
Gomes -1.2 runs below average
DM Bravo -6.22 runs below average
