Now, just lightly. See they're being progressive!
How ludicrous, still remains as a pretty retrograde measure. But less brutal, like criminal executions, first the law used guillotine to execute criminal heads, afterwards they changed it for hanging, and nowadays there is lethal injection. See? Same action, different approach.
