Muslims technically dont have to do 1 year work or reading...there is nothing to support it in Quran.
it is said though that during the month of Subraat you can offer extra prayers for all your dearly departed...however everytime you are in sajda your prayers include praying for your parents.

Maulana Shiraz of Madinah Mosqu , Imam Yusuf of Great Lakes , Brampton
and local Rayman Ali of Hifazatul .
It was overwhelming !

his sister was married to my brother - they had one son and then divorced
