Lead Selector Haynes puts faith in Brathwaite, Chanderpaul opening combo

Lead Selector the Most Honourable Dr. Desmond Haynes believes the opening combination of Kraigg Brathwaite and the uncapped Tagenarine Chanderpaul can pay dividends for West Indies in Australia.

The left-handed Chanderpaul has been included in the squad for the two-Test series starting next month following heavy scoring in First-Class cricket this year and is expected to partner captain Brathwaite at the top of the order.

“I believe [they can work well together]. I think what you have to take into consideration too is with Tage, a young man, he’s got a very good technique to the new ball which is good,” said Haynes, himself one of Test cricket’s greatest openers of all-time.

“He leaves alone very well. When you go to places like Australia, you don’t want to see the number three batsman coming in too early or the number four. So I think he and Kraigg would definitely complement each other because at least they would be looking at what openers should do for a team as well, which is build a foundation for the side so the guys coming in down the order would not get the new ball.”

Captain Brathwaite is renowned for his characteristic resolute approach to batting which has yielded nearly 5,000 Test runs, including 10 hundreds.

His powers of concentration were never more evident than in the second Test against England at Kensington Oval last March when he made a marathon 160 in the first innings and an unbeaten 56 in the second. He spent a combined 15 hours and 45 minutes, along with 673 balls at the crease – a record for a West Indies batsman in a single Test.

Chanderpaul, the son of West Indies legend Shiv Chanderpaul, has scored five First-Class hundreds – the last of those hundreds – 109 against Bangladesh A in St Lucia last August – required 337 balls in 6-¾ hours at the crease.

Haynes, who formed Test cricket’s most feared opening partnership with Sir Gordon Greenidge, said the upcoming series would be an excellent starting point for Chanderpaul’s career.

“I think it’s a good choice of picking the young man. [There is] no better place to start your cricket career than Australia where a lot of people believe if you do well against Australia then you’re rated,” Haynes explained. “It’s always been considered a tough place to play cricket and I think he has the ability to do it and I want to wish him all the best.”

West Indies are expected to assemble in Australia on November 10 and will play a three-day game against an ACT/NSW XI at the Philip Oval in Canberra starting seven days later, before facing the Prime Minister’s XI in a four-day match beginning November 23 at Manuka Oval in the same city.

The first Test bowls off at Perth Stadium on November 30 with the second at Adelaide Oval – a day/night contest – scheduled to start December 8. (CWI)

When Brathwaite and Chanderpaul open vs Australia we will probably be the only nation in the world who have two Test openers who have never played a professional T20 match in their careers

Ironic considering West Indians have been stereotyped as having given up on red ball

Considering he made his regional debut in 2009, it's remarkable that Kraigg Brathwaite never even considered playing a T20 match at any point

In today's era he wouldn't get a chance to play due to how advanced the format is, but in 2009 he definitely would have

Yet despite that reality, Haynes and his fellow selectors have opted for
Chase ahead of Motie, who as a left-arm spinner has to date only played
a solitary Test. His debut appearance against Bangladesh this past June.

Motie bowled just 16 overs in his maiden Test, conceding 96 runs without having taken a wicket. He was, however, impressively economical, conceding only 2.68 runs per over bowled.

Prior to his Test debut, Motie had taken 117 FC wickets in 35 matches. at an average of 21.52, and an economy rate of 2.47.

The question to be asked, therefore, is

why he’s now been discarded after only one Test

SerenaThis batting performance by the West Indies in the second innings blew me away. I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team. Let us hope that this effort by West Indies batsmen would not be a one-off performance, but will be the beginning of a renewed effort to improve the performances of the team, going forward.(13.10.2025, 10:28)(10:28)0

WarrenJameis Winston is asked about being named QB3 on the Giants' roster behind Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart:

"As a competitor, you want to be the starter. But I prepare to be the starter, I know I'm a starter in this league.

But you have to be able to be grateful for your role...my role right now is to assist Russ and Jaxson to be the best that they can be while preparing to be the best that I can be.

No matter if I'm 3, 33, this is my first year being number 19, so it's always a first for everything.

I focus on what I would love. And what I would love is for this team to have success."
