An ICC suspension from the final Test against South Africa may be just the start of sanctions for Australia's captain Steven Smith, who alongside his deputy David Warner faces anything up to a life ban for cheating under Cricket Australia's code of behaviour.
While Australia slid towards their heaviest defeat to South Africa since readmission, the problems raised by another batting surrender were nothing next to the potential ramifications from the ball tampering attempted on the third day of the Test.

The hysteria of the last 48 hours is now staring to sink in and one word comes to mind: Perspective. Yes, Steven Smith and Cameron Bancroft and whoever else is part of the leadership group did the wrong thing and have and must and will be punished.

sack Sutherland and Peever. They should take responsibility and resign. What do they do all day taking the money is create a culture of which Smith and Warner are a part. It's a failure of management. Cricket admin is shitty

Steve Smith's Australia cheated. They were stupid. They were hypocritical. But does it need to go further than the punishments already handed out? Not for me

I honestly do not believe any other country would have handed its captain and lead player a 12 month ban for attempted ball-tampering

Darren Lehmann has provided fantastic service and been part of a successful team that won a World Cup and a couple of Ashes... his work ethic has been terrific and he genuinely cares for and loves his players: Sutherland

I haven't seen Steve Smith's press conference, but I have had a lot of messages and will watch it. I know how sad and remorseful he is. Our hearts go out to the three suspended players right now: Sutherland
