Windward Islands defeated Guyana by three wickets in their opening round of the Regional U-17 50-over tournament yesterday at Bon Accord, Tobago. Guyana batted first and scored 156-9 after the game was reduced to 47 overs.
Skipper Travis Persaud stroked 40 (3×4) while Ronaldo Ali Mohamed supported with 33 (1×4 4×6) and Sherfene Rutherford 27 (5×4). The Guyanese suffered an early set back with the loss of Raymond Perez (00) without a run on the board before Rutherford and Ronaldo Renee (06) took the score to 29.
After Rutherford was dismissed, Guyana plunged into further trouble losing three quick wickets to be at 41-5. Persaud and Brandon Prashad steadied the innings somewhat with a sixth wicket stand of 32 before Prashad was run out for 15.

John slammed an unbeaten 48 (4×4 3×6), E. Stewart scored 40 (2×4) and Anil Matthew 19. Off-spinner Looknauth gave his team hope after he sent back Christian Charley (04) with the score on 15, but Matthew and Emmanuel Stewart stabilized the chase with a second wicket stand of 35 before Looknauth trapped Matthew LBW and had Nick Elibox (00) caught by Renee to keep his team in the hunt.
Anthanze (00) was then run out to leave the score at 55-4, but Stewart and John put together 38 for the fifth wicket before Stewart was run out after facing 75 balls. John continued to take the fight to the bowlers, dominating a sixth wicket stand of 34 with Deon Burton (12).
He then featured in an unbroken eight wicket stand of 30 with Joshua Mann (10*) to formalise the result. Looknauth was the pick of the bowlers with 3-25 from 10 overs.
