Lewis slams trial century

Hard-hitting opening batsmen Evin Lewis smashed a hundred on the final day of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) three-day trial match at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva yesterday to bolster his chances of making the national team for their regional four-day tournament.

The left-handed batsman, who was part of the T&T Super50 side, hit 110 off 132 balls with ten fours and five sixes to lead the Yannick Ottley XI to 207 for seven in their second innings, ensuring the game against the Rayad Emrit XI ended in a draw.

Lewis’ century yesterday was his second ton in three TTCB three-day trial games held to pick the national squad for the start of the 2014 first-class season. His first century in the trials was 124 off 134 balls.

Chairman of national selectors, Alec Burns said yesterday that the final 13-man squad had been picked along with three reserve players, and that the names of the players will be released to the media today.

Burns also noted that despite playing a brief half-hour innings on day two of the match on Wednesday, all-rounder Kieron Pollard is still injured and is not being considered for selection for the four-day opening match against the Windward Islands which bowls off next Friday at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain.

Also unavailable are Dwayne Bravo, Denesh Ramdin, Lendl Simmons, Ravi Rampaul and Sunil Narine who are all on West Indies duty.

Burns indicated that Darren Bravo, Kevon Cooper, Adrian Barath and Shannon Gabriel were among the players with international experience who should be available for T&T’s first match.
