Some years ago, as I watched Shivnarine Chanderpaul compile a triple century playing for Guyana against Jamaica at Sabina Park, I remember wondering how on earth were they going to get him out. If Jamaica's bowling attack was not the most penetrative, it did include fast bowling great Courtney Walsh and West Indies off spinner Nehemiah Perry; nobody, however, seemed to cause the left-hander much worry, and hardly a delivery went past his blade without permission.

He did not strike boundary after boundary to all corners of the ground. In fact, I remember falling into a boredom-induced doze as he occupied the crease for hour after hour. This was a much more orthodox Chanderpaul than the current version. His methods were less crabby, and his stance did not yet look as if he were taking strike from the square-leg umpire. His approach was simple: defend the good balls; punish the bad ones. Even then, as he was starting out on a long and stellar career, there was one quality that he oozed: solidity.
