Indian PM Narendra Modi has just announced the most wide-ranging lockdown the world has seen yet
- with some 1.3 billion people affected.
Here are the key points of his address:
The lockdown will be "absolute" and in force for 21 days
No citizen will be allowed to leave their homes during this period
It will come into force from midnight local time tonight
Mr Modi said it was the only way to break the cycle of the virus and that if the country
could not manage the next 21 days, it would be set back by 21 years
He also announced a fund of nearly $2bn (£1.7bn) towards health infrastructure in combating the coronavirus
He called on people not to spread rumours and to follow instructions
He said he was confident India would emerge from the crisis "successfully"

Guyanese Maurice Fernandes was the first West Indian Captain to win a Test match.
By 1838, the agriculture production in British Guiana (now Guyana) had fallen by 60 percent and plantations were
being shut down since most of the freed slaves refused to work for plantation owners who had mistreated them.
The British were growing sugar cane in Guyana
and had entered an Indian Province called Uttar Pradesh in 1765
Under British rule thousands of Indians wanted to escape the poor living conditions opted
to go to the ‘new world’ to work as indentured servants on the Sugar cane plantations in Guyana
nd later (1845) Trinidad and Jamaica.
By the 1860s Indians also settled in smaller numbers in St. Lucia, Grenada, St Vincent and St Kitts.
The first batch of 244 Indians arrived in British Guiana on a ship named Whitby on May 5th 1838
Many of their descedents still work on the sugar Estates, still remain in Guyana, St Kitts, Barbados and Trinidad.
