NESBIT CHHANGHUR
        by Vibert C. Cambridge

Nesbit Chhanghur’s song “Guyana Lament” is an        important record of the dark times Guyana experienced during the early        1960s. It is also a testament to the healing properties of music.        “Guyana Lament” contributed to racial healing.
Nesbit Chhanghur, born in the early 1930s, began his        musical career at home in Fyrish, Berbice. The Chhanghur’s home was a        center for Indian culture in the village. His father Russell Chhanghur        played the sitar and other siblings played harmonium, piano accordion        and the fiddle. Nesbit played the dantal. He got his first guitar lesson        from Buddy Hector. According to Nesbit, Buddy Hector was an African        Guyanese carpenter who played the guitar and was one of the many        musicians living in multi-racial Fyrish in the early 1940s.
Nesbit        Chhanghur has been called “Guyana first singing cowboy” and the “pioneer        of country and western music in Guyana.” His love for country and        western music developed as a result of a 78 rpm Bluebird record his        father bought from an itinerant English salesman who serviced the        expatriate communities that lived on the sugar estates owned and        operated by Bookers during the 1940s. The songs on the record were “T is        for Texas and T is for Tennessee” and “Blue Yodel.” The performer was        Jimmy Rogers. Nesbit Chhanghur sharpened his singing skills as a regular        performer on the important radio shows produced in New Amsterdam by the        legendary Olga Lopes Seales - “Berbice Calling”( a talent show) and        “Olga Lopes Sings.”
Besides performing music, Nesbit Chhanghur has had a        full career as a teacher and as an administrator. He was a history        teacher and choir master at the Berbice Educational Institute. In 2002,        he received an award from the alumni of the Berbice Educational        Institute at a reunion held in Toronto, Canada. He was the first        Guyanese to serve as executive director/general secretary of the YMCA in        Guyana. It was at the YMCA complex in Thomas Lands, where British troops        were garrisoned, that he composed “Guyana Lament.” The recording of the        song and its popularization (it was played up to 24 times per day) were        encouraged by Radio Demerara’s Rafiq Khan.
Nesbit Channghur, singer and composer lives in Ottawa,        Canada with his wife Greta. In 2002, Nesbit and Greta celebrated their        50th wedding anniversary. They have four sons and two daughters. His        sons Rohan, Anthony, Brian and Sean are also musicians and accompanied        Nesbit on the influential CD You’ll Always Be There. Nesbit Chhanghur, a        Guyanese cultural hero, received a Wordsworth McAndrew Award at Folk        Festival 2002 in Brooklyn, New York.

Rory Jagdeo was born in little village called Fyrish in the county of Berbice, Guyana, South America. (Fyrish is located approximately eleven miles from New Amsterdam and two miles North from the Atlantic coast. Guyana is bordered by Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname, and the Atlantic Ocean.) *** Rory attended Fyrish Congregational School, Berbice Educational Institute and later studied Electrical Technology at New Amsterdam Technical Institute. *** After graduation, Rory migrated to Toronto to study at Radio College of Canada. He would eventually move back to Guyana to work at the Bauxite Plant in Linden as an Industrial Electrician. *** Growing restless yet again, Rory traveled to Suriname – a Dutch colony in South America for two weeks and ended up spending five years working as an Industrial Electrician. *** Rory’s musical career started when he was around nine or ten after his father gave him a harmonica for Christmas. Rory remembered playing it non-stop at the time. *** Another of Rory’s earliest memory was belting out songs during lunch break at school with his friends. Rory’s love for music was so profound that he began playing harmonica and acoustic guitar in a gospel band. *** In between working full time in the Telecommunications field for the past 20 years, Rory would go on to receive his BS in Electrical Technology at the University of Houston, became a member of the Unitarian Fellowship blues band called The Blue Notes. Volunteered as a Board member for the Houston Blues Society. *** During this time, although Rory’s love for music was on the back burner, he would continue to search out new music and rhythm to “soothe or intoxicate” this being because music to Rory is really food, water, air and nectar for the soul. *** Although Rory’s taste of music is universal, he finds himself more drawn to classical, rock, pop, latin, blues, new age, and recently he was introduced to alternative by his son Peter who is a music major at Moores Music School. (In fact, Peter was the one who laid the bass track on “Friday Night Blues” and “You Belong To Me” and violin solo in “Hanging On”) *** “Hanging on” is Rory’s first studio album and released his second album “Cling And You Die” November 2010 which is based on the paradox of attachment. After a near death freak accident on December 4th 2009, Rory was determined to composed and record this album. It was as if he came back from the dead to finish this task.  *** Rory dedicated the third song on the Hanging On album “I will Love You Forever” to his uncle Ricknauth Jaggernauth who was a September 11 victim. This song was created from the point of view (POV) of Rick as if he is reaching out to comfort all those who knew him. *** “Fragile” one of Rory’s favorite is a slow rock that has a Pink Floyd feel but takes on its own character- soothing yet intense was remixed and added to the “Cling And You Die” album.  *** Rory believes his musical achievement was possible through MKV (Mathematical Karmic Value) a phrase he invented. MKV, also a name used for one of the songs on his album has a combination of guitar and tabla as well. *** Rory hopes to touch people with music and hope that each and every soul would be inspired with at least one song on both of his album. Most of the songs are based on a “bluesy seductiveness, pop/rock melodies that reflect “the secrets of the soul.” My Texas Music review sums it up perfectly:Rory is a breath of fresh air in today's music scene...his musical influences are quite diverse, so no matter what style of music you might prefer, you'll find something on this album that will move you!

Perhaps the most perplexing aspect of AT&T Stadium, otherwise known as “Jerry World,” is the glare from the sun that bursts through the windows and shines directly onto the field. Time and time again the glare has impacted players’ visibility during games, yet Jerry Jones refuses to make any changes to account for the sun.

Rather than install curtains, Jones has previously said he feels it’s a home-field advantage to have that type of stadium factor impacting games. Well, the glare ended up benefitting the Chiefs early into Thursday’s Thanksgiving game, as a pass from Dak Prescott to George Pickens fell incomplete, at least in part due to the impact of the sun’s glare.

I kept closing my eyes and then rubbing and opening them again and sat transfixed as I watch that unbelievable partnership between John Campbell and Shai Hope. What a magnificent performance by these two! It just goes to show that patience, determination and effort can go a long way to improve the performances of the West Indies team.
